Online Lecture by Richard J. Roberts, Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences

On March 31st, Richard N. Zare, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to give an online lecture entitled "Problem Solving: The Road to Success" for undergraduate students of Guangxi University. The lecture was the first in the 2023 Global Vision Lectures at the university.

In the lecture, Academician Richard N. Zare, used a brain teaser as an introduction to comprehensively explain the theoretical knowledge and practical applications of problem-solving. He focused on introducing problem-solving methods, such as Working Backwards and in means-ends analysis, while guiding students to think deeply. Academician Richard N. Zare also introduced ten elements of a success career based on his own life experience and encouraged students to accept failures, keep trying and accumulating, and enhance their confidence in problem-solving. The lecture was easy to understand, with illustrations and rich examples to introduce the path and methods of problem-solving, and was well received by the students.

Richard N. Zare is an internationally renowned physical and analytical chemist who served as chair of the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University in the United States. In 1976, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (at the age of 37). He was also elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of London, and the Indian National Science Academy. Additionally, he fellowships the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, and in 2011, he was awarded the Einstein Professorship by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Over 300 faculty members and students, including representatives from the International Cooperation and Exchange Department, the Academic Affairs Office, and the Analytical Testing Center, attended the lecture.
