Academician Yukio Tamura Delivers an Academic Lecture at GXU

On January 15, Yukio Tamura, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor of Chongqing University, delivered a lecture at GXU's Overseas Distinguished Scholars Forum.

 

                                 

 

In his lecture titled Mathematical Models for Understanding Phenomena: How to Study Engineering, Prof. Yukio Tamura explained the natural limitations of human beings in "observing" and "understanding" phenomena. He emphasized the importance of constructing mathematical models for "understanding" phenomena and discussed the essential attributes of an ideal mathematical model.  

Drawing from his early work on vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders, Prof. Yukio Tamura introduced the development process of the Tamura Wake Oscillator Model and demonstrated its important role in helping "understand" the physical phenomenon of vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders. He also showcased the model's broad applicability and continued relevance in subsequent research endeavors.

Prof. Yukio Tamura is an internationally renowned expert in the field of structural wind engineering. He has conducted systematic research across various aspects of wind-resistant design for engineering structures. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Alan G. Davenport Award from the International Association for Wind Engineering and the Robert H. Scanlan Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. 

Prof. Yukio Tamura also visited the State Key Laboratory of Featured Metal Materials and Life-cycle Safety for Composite Structures and the Large-scale Structural Testing Platform for Civil Engineering at Guangxi University. 

Over 30 faculty members and students from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture attended the lecture.
